(Higgins & Associates) is a multi-disciplined engineering firm based in Littleton, Colorado that provides forensic engineering, expert witness, construction quality assurance, and cost consulting services to the insurance industry, law firms, contractors, and commercial/residential property owners. 

Higgins & Associates continues to build on a 25-year history of bringing the most trusted, objective, and robust professional engineering services to clients across Colorado and beyond.  In response to a significant increase in demand from our clients, we are seeking a Student Intern for our Colorado office enrolled in a Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or other similar building/site engineering program at an ABET accredited university. This highly educational position offers exposure to many forensic disciplines evaluating residential and commercial structures and site components for failure or potential failure, facilitating rehabilitation activities and supporting litigation. It offers a unique opportunity to work with experienced engineering professionals, through a combination of both field and office-based activities. The successful candidate will support senior engineers / architects who are responsible for conducting forensic investigations, property evaluations and providing construction defect expert witness services in relation to commercial, institutional, multi-family and residential buildings. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Support licensed engineers in performing field inspections, site visits and conducting investigation activities across the Front Range of Colorado.
  2. Review plans, structural and architectural details, and other relevant documentation to determine pertinent information regarding the original construction of a subject building
  3. Conduct research into building codes, industry best practices and the standard of care expected of contractors and other associated tradespeople
  4. Undertake engineering analysis and perform engineering calculations relating to existing structures and to support future repair designs
  5. Support the development of as-built plans and repair designs using AutoCAD, Enercalc and Adobe Acrobat / BlueBeam Revu
  6. Perform field observations before and during the repair phase as directed by licensed engineers
  7. Collaborate with other team members to produce neat, detailed and accurate engineering deliverables

Skills, Capabilities and Experience:

  • Undergraduate student in Structural, Civil, Architectural Engineering or other similar building/site engineering discipline currently enrolled in an ABET accredited degree program at a university
  • Must own or have access to automobile with valid Colorado driver’s license and valid automobile insurance
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word and a PDF management software package such as BlueBeam Revu or Adobe Acrobat
  • A working knowledge of AutoCAD is desirable as well as knowledge of finite element analysis tools or other industry accepted engineering software tools
  • Ability to communicate complex technical information and build rapport with other engineers, clients, contractors, sub-contractors and other stakeholders
  • Satisfactory completion of background check (including motor vehicle and criminal investigation)

Education/ Formal Training Required:

  • Currently enrolled in degree program at an ABET accredited college in the field of Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or other similar building/site discipline.
